Direct Placement Adoptions

At Berg, Debele, DeSmidt & Rabuse, P.A., we are not a typical firm with regard to direct placement adoptions. Our involvement in these adoptions runs deep. As one of Minnesota's premier law firms for adoptions, we have been very influential in how adoption law has changed over time as well as assisting in formation of the process for direct placement adoptions in Minnesota.

Several of our attorneys are members of the American Academy of Adoption Attorneys (AAAA), a group that oversees adoptions in the United States to ensure that moral and ethical standards are being met. This level of expertise and involvement in adoption law sets our firm apart.

Representation for Direct Placement Adoptions in Minneapolis and St. Paul

A direct placement adoption is not handled through an adoption agency. In a direct placement adoption, the birth parent has the option of negotiating terms such as wanting the adoption to be an "open" adoption, which permits the birth mother to remain in the child's life, or a "closed" adoption where the records remained sealed.

In a direct placement adoption, the biological parent may also be involved in selecting the adoptive parents. For a direct placement adoption to occur, the biological parent must voluntarily terminate parental rights and consent to the adoption, or those rights must be terminated involuntarily through the legal process.

Our attorneys understand the intricacies of the direct adoption process because they were instrumental in creating it. This is crucial, as they are able to identify potential roadblocks and delays in advance and take steps to facilitate the adoption process as efficiently as possible. We provide counsel to biological and adoptive parents, advocating for their rights and seeking outcomes that are in the best interests of adopted children whose lives will be changed forever by the outcome.
